 Ram Setu Movie Review

Overview

Ram Setu is the story of an archeologist’s (Aryan Kulshrestha) life-changing expedition to Bamyan, Afghanistan where he excavates ancient treasure belonging to an Indian king. The film follows Aryan as he is tasked with submitting a report stating that the Ram Setu is a naturally made structure and not man-made, leading him on a journey to prove that it was indeed built by Lord Ram and the Vanar Sena.

Analysis

Despite an interesting premise and well-executed climax, Ram Setu suffers from an unconvincing plot and poor VFX. The screenplay is a mixed bag, with some well thought out scenes but also several that are silly and convenient. The direction is okay, but the VFX is poor for a big budget film and it is difficult to believe that nobody in the last 7000 years managed to locate the significant places Aryan and his team find. Additionally, showing the attackers as being justified in assaulting Aryan is problematic. Overall, the film receives a rating of 2.5 out of 5.

Story and Screenplay

The story of Ram Setu is promising and has the potential to be a blockbuster. However, the screenplay is inconsistent, with some well thought out scenes and others that are convenient and silly. The dialogues, written by Abhishek Sharma and Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, are simple and sharp.

Direction and VFX

Abhishek Sharma’s direction is passable, with the film being able to maintain viewer interest throughout its 144 minute runtime. The research and excavation scenes are unique and the chase sequence in Jaffna is well done. However, the VFX is poor and it is hard to believe that nobody in the last 7000 years was able to locate the significant places that Aryan and his team find easily.

Acting

Akshay Kumar does a good job as Aryan Kulshrestha, carrying the film on his shoulders. Nassar is effective as Indrakant and Praveshh Rana, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Jennifer Piccinato also put in decent performances in their supporting roles.

Pros

  • Interesting premise
  • Well-executed climax

Cons

  • Unconvincing plot
  • Poor VFX
  • Inconsistent screenplay
  • Problematic portrayal of attackers
