Freddy: A Passable Thriller with Solid Performances from Karthik Aaryan and Alaya F | FULL REVIEW

“Freddy” is a recent film starring Karthik Aaryan and Alaya F, and directed by Shashanka Ghosh. The film is currently streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar and follows the story of an introverted dentist, Freddy, and a woman, Kainaaz, who is suffering from domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. Freddy and Kainaaz become attracted to each other and plan to get rid of Kainaaz’s husband, Rustom, in order to be together. The film follows the consequences of their actions and how they deal with the aftermath.

Positive Aspects:

Karthik Aaryan delivers a strong performance as Freddy, showcasing a different side to his acting abilities than we have seen before. He effectively portrays the character’s introverted and underconfident nature and is convincing in the emotional scenes. Alaya F is also convincing as Kainaaz, a woman suffering from domestic abuse, and has good chemistry with Aaryan. The second half of the film is more exciting, with a fast-paced narrative and some interesting moments, including a cat-and-mouse game between the main characters. The climax is also well-handled, with a touch of humor.

Negative Points:

  • The film lacks originality, sticking to a formulaic template that has been seen before
  • The plot is predictable and resembles a Hindi film that was released in the past
  • The police investigation is unrealistic and fails to cross-check the facts presented by Freddy’s character
  • The first hour of the film is dragged out with some lengthy scenes

Technical Aspects:

  • The production design and cinematography are good, reflecting the dark tone of the film
  • The background score and editing could have been better
  • The production values are satisfactory

Verdict:

Overall, Freddy is a mediocre thriller that fails to stand out due to its lack of originality and predictability. While Karthik Aaryan and Alaya F give solid performances, they are unable to save the film from its cliched storytelling. You can give it a watch, but don’t expect anything extraordinary.

The director of Freddy, Shashanka Ghosh, did a passable job with the film. While his work is better than his previous outing, Plan A Plan B, it is not considered great enough.
